Youth dies in police custody in Amritsar; family alleges torture, stages protest on highway
Police officials stated that Harman’s health suddenly worsened, and he was immediately taken to a hospital where he later died.
PTC News Desk: A massive row erupted after a youth from Amritsar died in the custody of Jandiana Guru police. The deceased, Harman Singh, was allegedly taken into custody by the Jandiala police on Saturday evening and died this morning.
Police officials stated that Harman’s health suddenly worsened, and he was immediately taken to a hospital where he later died. However, his family strongly disputed this account, insisting that Harman was in good health before he was picked up from home. Accusing the police of misconduct and brutality, the family blocked GT Road and shouted slogans against the Punjab Police.
Harman’s mother, Balwinder Kaur, said he had been detained for questioning following a village dispute. She mentioned that his uncle had visited him in custody the previous night and found him completely normal. But when the family went to the police station this morning to deliver tea, officers informed them that he had been shifted to the hospital after suddenly falling ill.
DSP Ravinder Singh said the exact reason for death will be determined through a post-mortem and confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
