Sikh man, running for city council, racially targeted in Australia

A Sikh man running for city council in Australia was racially targeted by a man in a truck. The man shouted racial slurs at the city council nominee’s cut out made from placard.

The Port Augusta city council nominee, Sunny Singh told the sources that it was the first time he has experienced racism. A video, in which he was attacked, was posted to a national trucking Facebook page. In the video, the man was seen passing derogatory racial slurs at a life-sized cutout from Singh’s election placards. Then the cut-out was run over by the truck.

Singh told the media sources that he was shocked. He was clueless that why did it even happen at the first place. He further said that the Port Augusta community had rallied in his support. When he saw the video, he also read the messages and comments supporting him.

South Australian Attorney-General, Vicki Chapman, described the video as "disturbing" and "on the face of it, racist conduct". Port Augusta Mayor, Sam Johnson, told the media that he was shocked to witness the violence and racism in the video.  The Indian community and the Sikh temples have contributed a lot in Port Augusta’s economy and community.  The trucking company has been suspended as a service provider.
