Six killed as thunderstorm hits Kolkata, nearby areas

Thunderstorms lashed Kolkata city on Monday leading to the death of six people. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms led to uprooted trees and snapped cables. Kolkata received 15.6mm rainfall and winds of 44-km-per-hour.

Two people died after they lost balance because of a storm and fell into the river. They were taken to the hospital where they were brought dead. Another person died while sleeping when a temporary shelter collapsed due to heavy wind.

Another victim, identified as Malika, a higher secondary student, died after she was struck by lightning. She was also declared brought dead. Two farmers also died after they were struck by lightning in Keshpur and Kesiyari areas in West Midnapore.

Another person identified as Sheikh Kalu was electrocuted when he touched a lamp post when a heavy storm hit Midnapore.
