History at Commonwealth Games: Gulveer Singh becomes first Indian to bag silver in mens 10,000m at Commonwealth Games

PTC News Desk: Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh created history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian man to win a medal in the 10,000m event at the Commonwealth Games. The national record holder won the silver medal after finishing the race in 27:49.8 at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
Australia's Ky Robinson won the gold medal with a time of 27:48.93, while David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man claimed bronze.

Gulveer's achievement is also significant because it is the first time since the 1986 Commonwealth Games that no African runner finished in the top three of the men's 10,000m event. His silver medal is being compared to Avinash Sable's historic silver in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where Sable ended Kenya's dominance in the event.
Gulveer is also the first Indian to win a medal in the 10,000m since Kavita Raut won bronze in the women's event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Kavita was also the first Indian to win a track medal at the Games in more than 50 years.
Training under coach Scott Simmons in the United States, Gulveer delivered a smart and determined race against a strong field that included several African runners and 2023 World Championships medallist Daniel Ebenyo. Despite rainy conditions in Glasgow, he stayed among the leading runners for the first 4,000 metres.
When he slipped to ninth place around the 5,600m mark, Gulveer remained patient and gradually worked his way back. With five laps left, he was in sixth place. In the final 1,000 metres, he moved into the top three and then overtook David Mullarkey in the closing stages to secure the silver medal.
Gulveer, who set the national record in the 10,000m last year, has been one of India's most consistent long-distance runners and has regularly broken national records. His silver is India's second athletics silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Sarvesh Kushare's silver in the men's high jump.
Meanwhile, Indian women's high jump national record holder Pooja was eliminated after clearing 1.77m but failing to clear 1.82m in all three of her attempts.
