PTC Web Desk: Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the Asian Games 2026 after suffering a ligament injury to his ankle, dealing a major setback to India’s athletics campaign.

Neeraj Chopra confirmed the development in a social media post, saying the injury occurred during training after the Lausanne Diamond League. Following discussions with his medical team, he has decided to stay out for the remainder of the 2026 season.

The decision means Chopra will also miss the Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 5 and the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest from September 11 to 13.

Neeraj Chopra confirms ankle injury

Neeraj Chopra said he had finally started feeling confident about his form after recording a season-best throw of 88.05 metre in Lausanne. However, his progress was interrupted by the ankle injury. He said the focus now is on making a proper recovery and returning stronger.

The injury comes at a particularly disappointing time for Chopra, who had been working his way back to top form after dealing with fitness problems over the past couple of years.

Chopra's 2026 season comes to an end

The Indian javelin star had already faced interruptions this season because of a lower-back problem that had troubled him since September last year.

Despite those concerns, Neeraj Chopra managed to produce an 85.83m throw at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, winning a silver medal for India. He then improved his season's best to 88.05m at the Lausanne Diamond League.

His performance in Lausanne had raised hopes that Chopra was returning to his best. His latest injury, however, has forced him to bring his 2026 campaign to an early end.

Big blow for India ahead of Asian Games

Neeraj Chopra's absence will be a significant setback for the Indian contingent at the Asian Games. He had qualified for the Diamond League Final and was also expected to be one of India's biggest medal hopes at the continental event.

For now, the priority for the Olympic medallist will be rehabilitation and recovery as he looks to make a strong comeback next season.
