PTC News Desk: Smriti Mandhana has been named the new captain of the Indian women's cricket team, replacing Harmanpreet Kaur.

The BCCI announced Mandhana's appointment on Tuesday, shortly after Harmanpreet decided to step down as captain in all three formats. Harmanpreet, who led India to their first Women's Cricket World Cup title in 2025 and most recently guided the team to Asian Games gold in Nagoya, will continue playing for India.

Mandhana, who has been part of the Indian team since 2013, will now take over as the full-time captain. She has previously led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs.

Mandhana acknowledged the contribution of her predecessor after being handed the leadership role.

“To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply,” Mandhana said.

“I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey.”

Mandhana takes over from Harmanpreet

Harmanpreet announced her decision to give up the captaincy earlier on Tuesday. Her leadership career began with the T20I team in 2016, and she became the full-time captain in ODIs and Tests in 2022.

During her time as captain, Harmanpreet achieved several major milestones. The biggest came in 2025 when she led India to their first Women's Cricket World Cup title. She also guided India to two Asian Games gold medals, including the latest one in Nagoya.

Harmanpreet also became the most-capped player in women's international cricket this year.

Mandhana brings plenty of leadership experience to the role. Apart from international cricket, she has captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women's Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.

BCCI president Mithun Manhas backed Mandhana and said her experience and understanding of the game would help her lead the Indian women's team into a new phase.
