Sudan: 19 killed in protests against soaring bread, fuel prices

The clashes between the anti-riot police and protesters in demonstrations against the rise of bread and fuel prices have killed 19 people and injured 219 other people on Thursday in Sudan.

According to the media sources, two security personnel were also among those who died in the clashes. On Thursday, Sudanese journalists started a strike because of increase in bread prices. They declared a three-day strike starting from December 27 to protest against the government’s violence on demonstrators.

The journalists’ strike was also a protest against the government’s continuous ‘barbaric’ assaults on press freedom. The journalists in Sudan frequently complain of harassment from the authorities.

Doctors in the country have already been on a strike from December 24. On December 19, eight people died in the clashes in Khartoum and several other cities.

Sudan country is facing soaring inflation and acute foreign currency crisis. The rate of inflation is as high as 70 % while shortages of bread and fuel have also hit many cities.
