Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll to take place on May 10

The seats where by-polls will be held are Jalandhar, (Punjab); Jharsuguda (Odisha); Chhanbey (UP); Suar (UP); Sohiong (Meghalaya).

Chandigarh, March 29: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the date for by-polls for Jalandhar Lok Sabha for one parliamentary constituency and 4 assembly constituencies.

The seats where by-polls will be held are Jalandhar, (Punjab); Jharsuguda (Odisha); Chhanbey (UP); Suar (UP); Sohiong (Meghalaya). Earlier, during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab's Phillaur region Congress's Jalandhar MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary (76) died on January 14. He died due to cardiac arrest during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary was two-time member of Parliament was participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra with former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in Phillaur when he fainted and suffered from cardiac arrest. 

The polling for the by-election will be held on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13. According to ECI, the candidates can file the nomination for the seat by April 20. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature is April 24.  

Earlier, Congress party has already declared Santokh Chaudhary’s wife Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary as its candidate for the election.
