Imphal, June 29: The convoy of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was brought to a stop by the police today while en route to Churachandpur, one of the severely affected districts in the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. Gandhi had arrived in Imphal earlier today with the intention of meeting individuals who have been displaced by the ethnic conflict and are currently residing in relief camps.

Since May of this year, more than 50,000 people have sought shelter in over 300 relief camps across the state due to the escalation of ethnic tensions. In light of security concerns, the police decided to halt Rahul Gandhi's convoy at Bishnupur, which is situated 20 kilometers away from Imphal.

Authorities suggested that the Congress leader consider traveling to Churachandpur by helicopter rather than continuing the journey by road.

"A precautionary measure was taken to request the convoy to halt at Bishnupur due to the fear of potential incidents recurring," stated a police officer.

The clashes in Manipur ensued following a "Tribal Solidarity March" that took place in the hill districts on May 3, organized as a protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Prior to the outbreak of violence, tensions had already risen due to the eviction of Kuki villagers from forest reserves, resulting in a series of smaller-scale agitations.

The conflict between the Meitei population residing in and around the state capital Imphal Valley and the Kuki tribe settled in the hills has claimed the lives of over 100 individuals.
