PTC News Desk: All eight people on board a US B-52 bomber that crashed in California on Monday are believed to have died, according to Edwards Air Force Base. Photos from the crash site showed a massive fire that appeared to completely destroy the aircraft.

The accident occurred around midday at Edwards Air Force Base, a major US military facility located about 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Los Angeles.

In a statement, the base said that the B-52 Stratofortress, carrying eight crew members on a routine test flight, crashed shortly after taking off at 11:20 a.m. Initial reports suggest that no one could have survived the crash.

Emergency teams quickly reached the scene and officials are working to confirm the status of all personnel. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

Following the crash, the airfield was closed and all incoming aircraft were redirected to other locations. The base also suspended all non-commercial visitor passes until further notice so that it can focus entirely on emergency response efforts.
