China fireworks factory blast: At least 26 persons lost their lives and 61 others were injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a fireworks manufacturing unit in China’s Hunan province, state media reported.

The incident occurred at the Huasheng Fireworks plant in Liuyang city on Monday afternoon, triggering panic and large-scale evacuations. Authorities cleared residents within a three-km radius as a precaution amid fears of further explosions.

Rescue teams comprising more than 1,500 personnel, along with sniffer dogs, drones and robotic equipment were deployed to the site. Officials confirmed that seven persons trapped under debris were successfully rescued before operations concluded.

Investigators have begun probing the cause of the explosion, while the police have reportedly taken action against those responsible for managing the facility. Concerns were heightened during rescue efforts due to the presence of two gunpowder storage units within the premises, which posed a significant risk.

Emergency responders also sprayed water across the affected area to reduce the chances of secondary blasts. The force of the explosion caused widespread damage, shattering windows of nearby buildings and leaving structures severely impacted.

According to reports, the injured, in the 20-60 age group, suffered multiple injuries, including fractures caused by flying debris.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for full-scale rescue efforts and directed authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident to ensure accountability.

Local officials stated that environmental monitoring of air and water quality in the surrounding areas showed no abnormal readings following the blast.

Residents described scenes of destruction, with shattered glass, bent window frames and damaged doors in homes located close to the site. Some villagers have temporarily left the area due to safety concerns.

Liuyang is widely regarded as a global hub for fireworks production. However, accidents involving fireworks factories are not uncommon in China, often resulting in heavy casualties. Earlier this year, a similar explosion in Hubei province claimed 12 lives.
