US plans withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany amid rising tensions with Berlin
PTC Web Desk: The United States has announced plans to withdraw nearly 5,000 troops from Germany, a move expected to be carried out over the next six to 12 months, according to the Pentagon. The decision comes against the backdrop of escalating verbal exchanges between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The friction intensified after Merz publicly questioned Washington’s strategic clarity regarding the ongoing tensions involving Iran. Speaking at a recent event, the German leader suggested that the United States lacked a clear exit strategy and accused it of appearing diplomatically weakened in its engagements with Tehran. His remarks did not sit well with Trump, who sharply criticised Merz, accusing him of poor leadership and a lack of understanding of global security concerns.
Germany currently hosts more than 36,000 US troops, making it the second-largest American military deployment overseas after Japan. The US also maintains significant troop levels in Italy and the United Kingdom, reinforcing its long-standing military footprint across Europe.
For decades, American bases in Germany have served as a strategic cornerstone for US operations in Europe, particularly under the framework of NATO. However, disagreements over handling Iran have strained relations between Washington and several European capitals. Trump has repeatedly criticised European allies for not offering sufficient support, calling them ineffective during critical moments.
The US President has also hinted at possible troop reductions in Italy and Spain, citing their reluctance to align with Washington’s stance on Iran. Such moves could further widen divisions within NATO, raising concerns about alliance cohesion.
This is not the first time Trump has attempted to scale back US military presence in Germany. During his earlier tenure, he proposed withdrawing around 12,000 troops, criticising Berlin for failing to meet NATO’s defence spending target of 2% of GDP. That plan, however, was halted due to opposition in Congress and logistical challenges. It was later scrapped in 2021 under President Joe Biden.
The presence of US forces in Germany dates back to the aftermath of World War II, when American troops occupied parts of the country following the defeat of Nazi Germany. Over time, particularly during the Cold War, Germany became a key defensive front against the Soviet Union. Although troop numbers declined significantly after the fall of the Berlin Wall fall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the US has maintained a strong military presence in the region.
Today, American bases in Germany function not only as a deterrence force but also as logistical hubs supporting operations in regions such as the Middle East and Africa. Facilities like the Ramstein Air Base continue to play a central role in US global military operations.
Analysts believe the proposed troop reduction reflects a broader strategic shift by Washington, with increasing focus on the Indo-Pacific region to counter China’s growing influence. Despite the reduction, the US is expected to retain a substantial presence in Europe, underlining the continued importance of transatlantic security cooperation.
