If India is attacked, US will be there to help: Trumps big promise to PM Modi
Trump described the talks as "very good" and indicated that strategic cooperation between the two nations would continue to deepen.
PTC News Desk: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday voiced strong support for India, stating that the United States would stand by the country in the event of an attack as long as Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained in power. The comments were made during Trump's meeting with PM Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, marking their first face-to-face interaction since Operation Sindoor in May 2025.
The leaders met in the French town of Evian-les-Bains for their first bilateral discussion in 16 months. Trump described the talks as "very good" and indicated that strategic cooperation between the two nations would continue to deepen.
"If Modi is the leader and India is attacked, we will be there to help them," Trump said with a chuckle.
The meeting was particularly significant as both countries seek to repair ties affected by trade tariff disagreements, differences over Trump's assertions that he helped mediate the India-Pakistan conflict, stricter US immigration policies impacting Indians, and the deaths of three Indian sailors in recent US military strikes involving commercial vessels near Oman.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Trump highlighted the strength of the India-US partnership, saying relations between the two nations were exceptionally close.
"India and the United States share a tremendous relationship. We couldn't be closer. That applies to both of us as leaders and to our countries. It begins with the relationship between Prime Minister Modi and me, and our ties could not be stronger," Trump said.
