Lufthansa strike grounds 800 flights, around 1 lakh passengers hit across Germany
Travellers were left scrambling for alternative arrangements as terminals witnessed long queues and uncertainty
PTC Web Desk: Operations at Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, were severely disrupted after pilots and flight attendants went on strike, leading to the cancellation of nearly 800 flights and affecting close to one lakh passengers.
The industrial action caused widespread disruption at major hubs, including Frankfurt and Munich airports, where most international departures were called off. Travellers were left scrambling for alternative arrangements as terminals witnessed long queues and uncertainty.
Lufthansa expressed hope that normal flight schedules would gradually be restored by Friday, assuring passengers that efforts were underway to minimise inconvenience.
The strike stems from an ongoing dispute over pension schemes and retirement benefits. The pilots’ union has been demanding improved long-term financial security and enhanced benefits, while the airline management maintains that meeting these demands would put additional strain on its finances.
Meanwhile, the cabin crew union has also opposed the company’s decision to shut down its subsidiary, CityLine, terming the move unfair to employees. Union representatives said the protest was aimed at compelling management to return to the negotiating table rather than causing inconvenience to travellers.
The disruption comes at a crucial time for Germany, as the country prepares to host major international events such as the Berlin Film Festival and the Munich Security Conference, both of which draw global participants.
