Mahan Air aircraft was hit by the US in an airstrike at Mashhad Airport. The plane was scheduled to fly to Delhi for humanitarian aid,” the sources said.
There has been no immediate confirmation from the United States on the reported strike.
The incident comes at a time whe Iran is reportedly coordinating humanitarian shipment with India as New Delhi dispatched aid consignments to Iran earlier this month, what it described as long-standing civilisational and humanitarian ties between the two countries.
Meanwhile Iran issued a stron-worded response against the US airstrike calling the incident as war crime and clear violation of inernational law. It also asserted that targeting a civilian aircraft amounts to blatant violation of international aviation regulations, in stark contrast with humantiarian law.
The Civil Aviation Organisation called on international bodies to urgently investigate the incident, prosecute those responsible and ensure safeguards to prevent similar threats to civil aviation.
