PTC News Desk: A family holiday in Pakistan turned tragic after a nine-year-old Australian girl was killed when police allegedly opened fire on a vehicle carrying her family, mistaking them for armed robbery suspects following a hostage ordeal.
The deceased has been identified as Hania Ahmed whose death prompted Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to seek a "proper investigation" into the case.
Nine-year-old Hania, an Australian citizen, was tragically killed after police allegedly opened fire on a vehicle carrying her family during an operation against suspected robbers in Pakistan.
According to reports, on June 10, Hania was travelling with her family when armed men stopped their rental car at gunpoint and hijacked the vehicle. The family was reportedly held hostage inside the car by the robbers.
As police launched an operation to track down the suspects, officers allegedly mistook the hijacked vehicle carrying the family for the criminals' car and opened fire.
Hania suffered fatal gunshot wounds and died in the incident. Her father, Adeel Ahmed, and her brother were also injured during the shooting.
The family had already endured the trauma of being taken hostage by armed robbers before becoming caught in the middle of a police operation. What should have been a family holiday ended in tragedy when the rescue effort allegedly went wrong.
The incident has sparked outrage and grief in both Australia and Pakistan, with questions being raised about how the police operation was conducted and how a child and her family became victims of the shooting.
