PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while sitting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit, raised concerns about Indian sailors who were killed during recent US military strikes in the Middle East.

Speaking at a session on strengthening global partnerships and cooperation, Modi said the conflict in the region had caused major human and economic losses. He brought up the issue after three Indian crew members died when the oil tanker Settebello was hit in a US attack in the Gulf of Oman.

"We welcome the progress made in peace efforts in West Asia. This conflict has caused loss of life and property in our friendly countries in the region. Disruptions to maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz have affected the global economy. Several Indian civilians have also lost their lives," PM Modi.

The US military said it had taken action against three ships carrying Indian crew members — MT Marivex, MT Settebello, and MT Jalveer — claiming they had violated US restrictions on Iranian ports or were transporting Iranian oil.

A few days later, President Trump accused Iran of attempting a failed drone attack on Indian ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.

Modi also highlighted how the conflict has disrupted sea trade and put sailors at risk. He said that protecting seafarers, who play a key role in global trade, is a shared responsibility and stressed the need to keep sea routes safe so they can work without fear.
