Congress' Navjot Singh Sidhu won the last assembly elections and is the current MLA of Amritsar East. He won the 2017 elections by defeating Rajesh Kumar Honey of the Bharatiya Janata Party with a margin of 42,809 votes. BJP at that time had an alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal and announced Rajesh Honey as its MLA candidate from the Amritsar East constituency. Navjot Singh Sidhu (Congress) grabbed 60,477 votes.
