Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa of Congress won the last assembly elections and is the sitting MLA of Dera Baba Nanak. He won the 2017 assembly elections by defeating Shiromani Akali Dal's Sucha Singh Langah with a margin of 1194 votes. Shiromani Akali Dal gave the ticket to Sucha Singh Langah from Dera Baba Nanak constituency. In the previous assembly elections, he contested from the same constituency as an Akali dal candidate, however, lost to Sukhjinder Randhawa of Congress.
