Chandigarh, July 20: Renowned actor Akshay Kumar took to Twitter to express his deep shock and disgust after witnessing a viral video allegedly showing two women in Manipur being sexually assaulted by a mob on a public road.

Akshay's tweet read, "Shaken, disgusted to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. I hope the culprits get such a harsh punishment that no one ever thinks of doing a horrifying thing like this again."

Despite his genuine concern, Akshay faced severe criticism and trolling in response to his tweet. People highlighted the importance of speaking up earlier and not remaining silent, attributing the incident to a culture of silence among influential individuals.

One tweet pointed out, "I wish you had spoken before! All this is a result of a pervasive silence practiced by those who matter. Nevertheless, it's heartening to see people from all walks of life come out and speak against this terrible incident. Regards."

Another user sarcastically remarked, "Finally, every celebrity is given permission to tweet on the incident."

"Sir, do you consume the common man's salt or are you cut off from reality? If you have even a shred of genuine love for the people of our nation, ask Modi ji why he has been silent for so long on #Manipur_Violence," wrote another.

In response to the shocking video, a press note informed that a case of abduction, gangrape, and murder against unknown armed miscreants was registered at Nongpok Sekmai Police Station (Thoubal district) on May 4, 2023. The state police are actively investigating the matter to apprehend the culprits.

In a bid to prevent further circulation of the distressing video, the government issued an order to Twitter and other social media platforms, instructing them not to share the footage of the two Manipuri women being paraded nude.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter, questioning the Centre's actions and blaming the Prime Minister's silence for contributing to the chaos in the state.
