Five die after inhaling toxic gas at fish processing factory in Karnataka's Mangaluru
Mangaluru (Karnataka), April 18: As many as five workers died and three others were injured at a fish processing unit in Karnataka's Mangaluru while cleaning a huge tank, informed officials on Monday. Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar stated that "Five workers died and three others were injured at a fish factory in Mangaluru. The incident took place on Sunday, April 17. The Police have taken four people into custody in connection with the death of workers." "The workers had gone down into the huge tank that is used for cleaning fish that arrive from various places. They died while cleaning the tank," he added. He further said that the exact cause of death is not known, however, inhaling toxic gas is believed to be the reason behind unfortunate deaths. The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Samiulla Islam, Ommar Farooq, Nizamuddin Alis, Mirazul Islam and Sharafath Ali. Meanwhile, the other three workers who are undergoing treatment are Hasan Ali, Mohammed Karibulla and Hafeezulla. The workers are said to be from West Bengal. According to the police officials, no safety equipment was supplied to the labourers at the unit and police have booked cases under IPC Sections 337, 338, 304, and 34.
