Guru Tegh Bahadur Jayanti 2022: Know significance, history and more about 400th Prakash Purab
Guru Tegh Bahadur Jayanti 2022 or Prakash Purab 2022 is celebrated to mark the birth of the Ninth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Tegh Bahadur and to remember his life and teachings. This year it is being observed on Thursday to celebrate the 400th year of his birth anniversary.
Born in 1621, Guru Tegh Bahadur was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind and is remembered as the warrior guru, who relentlessly fought for religious freedom. He is widely regarded as the saviour guru. Guru Tegh Bahadur is considered to be an honourable scholar and poet who greatly contributed to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhism.

The Prakash Purab is celebrated to mark Guru Tegh Bahadur's birth anniversary. Born as Tyaga Mal, he is widely regarded as the saviour guru who relentlessly fought for religious freedom.
During the Mughal rule, there were persecutions of the Hindus and under the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, people were forced to convert to Islam. At that time, Guru Tegh Bahadur resisted forced conversions of non-Muslims to Islam, after which he was beheaded in Delhi in 1675.
The sites of his execution and cremation in Delhi were later turned into Sikh holy places namely Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib and the day of his execution (November 24) is observed as Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Day.

He is also the father of the Tenth Guru, Gobind Singh.
To celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, people, especially the Sikh community, hold religious processions, organise Shabad Kirtans and read about his life’s work. They also visit gurudwaras and distribute food.

The year 2022 marks the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on the 400th Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji from the historic Red Fort on April 21. A commemorative coin and postage stamp will also be released on the occasion.
As many as 400 'ragis' would perform 'Shabad Kirtan', said Union Minister for Culture G Kishan Reddy while addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday. Minister of State for Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal and Secretary, Culture, Govind Mohan were also present.
