After Karnataka man loses Rs 1 crore in IPL betting, wife dies by suicide

PTC News Desk: In a tragic turn of events, Ranjitha, a 23-year-old woman from Chitradurga, Karnataka, was discovered hanging in her home on March 18. The family revealed that her husband, Darshan Babu, had amassed a debt exceeding Rs 1 crore due to his involvement in cricket betting, particularly on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

Darshan, employed as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga, had been immersed in IPL betting from 2021 to 2023. The financial strain caused by his gambling habbit weighed heavily on the couple. Allegedly, Darshan borrowed upwards of Rs 1.5 crore to sustain his betting ventures after suffering significant losses. Although he managed to repay Rs 1 crore of the borrowed sum, he still owes Rs 84 lakh to creditors.

Ranjitha, who married Darshan in 2020, only discovered his betting activities in 2021, according to her father, Venkatesh. Venkatesh filed a complaint stating that his daughter succumbed to immense distress caused by constant harassment from moneylenders, leading to her tragic decision. He implicated 13 individuals who had purportedly lent money to Darshan.

Venkatesh explained that Darshan was coerced into betting by promises of quick wealth. "He (Darshan) was not willing to get into betting, but the suspects forced him saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security," he stated.

During their investigation, authorities discovered a suicide note in which Ranjitha detailed the ordeal of harassment they endured. Darshan and Ranjitha leave behind a two-year-old son, adding further tragedy to this heart-wrenching situation.
