Crackdown Against Child Marriages in Assam: Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced the arrest of over 1,039 individuals in the second phase of a comprehensive state-wide operation aimed at curbing child marriages. This crackdown comes as a follow-up to the initial drive earlier in the year, during which thousands of individuals were apprehended across the state. Sarma said that, atleast 3,000 people will be arrested.
"In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation, which began in the early hours of dawn," Chief Minister Sarma stated.

The campaign against child marriages remains ongoing, and it is expected that the number of arrests related to this social issue will continue to climb as the operation progresses.
Previously, on September 11, Chief Minister Sarma had disclosed to the Assam Assembly that a total of 3,907 individuals had been arrested over the past five years in connection with child marriage cases. Among these, 3,319 are facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO).
