Bypoll results: BJP and Opposition share seats; Samajwadi Party leads in Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow/Agartala, September 8: The results of assembly by-elections for seven seats across six states have yielded a mixed outcome, with the BJP securing three seats, while one each went to the Congress, JMM, and TMC. The Samajwadi Party is also poised to clinch one seat.
The BJP successfully retained the Bageshwar assembly seat in Uttarakhand and held on to the Dhanpur seat in Tripura. Moreover, the party managed to wrest the Boxanagar assembly seat from the CPI(M) in Tripura, despite the unified efforts of the INDIA alliance parties. However, the BJP lost the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The BJP celebrated its victory in the Tripura bypolls, marking what they termed as the "end of the road" for the Communist parties in the northeastern state, which was historically a stronghold of the Left. Sambit Patra, the BJP's in-charge for the northeastern region, described the results as a setback for the "arrogant" alliance of opposition parties.
On the other hand, the opposition alliance tasted success in Jharkhand, where the JMM retained the Dumri assembly seat. In Uttar Pradesh, the opposition supported the Samajwadi Party, which is set to win the Ghosi assembly seat.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav declared his party's victory, emphasising the triumph of "positive politics" over negative communal politics, even though the formal results were pending. These bypolls represented the first electoral test for the INDIA alliance, comprising 28 parties formed recently to challenge the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.
Out of the seven seats contested in the bypolls held on September 5, three were previously held by the BJP, and one each belonged to the Congress, SP, CPI(M), and JMM.

In Kerala, the opposition Congress-UDF retained the Puthuppally Assembly constituency, with candidate Chandy Oommen securing a decisive victory over the ruling LDF candidate, Jaick C Thomas.
In Jharkhand, Bebi Devi of the Jharkhand Mukti Moracha won in Dumri, Giridih district, defeating AJSU's Yashoda Devi by over 17,000 votes.
In West Bengal, TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy emerged victorious in the Dhupguri seat, securing over 4,313 votes more than the nearest BJP rival, Tapasi Roy. In Uttarakhand, BJP's Parwati Dass triumphed in Bageshwar, defeating Congress' Basant Kumar by over 2,400 votes.
In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party's Sudhakar Singh led in Ghosi, with a comfortable margin over BJP rival Dara Singh Chauhan. In Tripura, BJP's Tafajjal Hossain won the Boxanagar seat, while BJP candidate Bindu Debnath emerged victorious in the Dhanpur seat.
These by-elections were marked by political shifts and intense competition, providing insights into the evolving political landscape across these states.
