Another tragedy in Delhi: Four-storey residential building collapses in Seemapuri, many feared trapped
PTC Web Desk: A residential building came down in Delhi's Seemapuri area on Wednesday afternoon, and several people are feared to be stuck under the rubble. Rescue teams are at the site.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) got a call about the collapse at around 3.30 pm and sent four fire tenders to the spot. A DFS officer said some people could be trapped under the debris and that the search and rescue operation is still on.
A local resident said the collapsed building was his house. He said his daughter and son-in-law had been trapped inside but were pulled out later. According to him, at least 12 persons could still be under the debris.
Another resident, who lives on a neighbouring street, said the building had a shop on the ground floor, with families living on the four floors above it. It is learnt the police had rescued two or three persons, but many were still trapped.
Pankaj Luthra, the municipal councillor from Jhilmil, also reached the site. He said the information they received was that an old building, about 40 to 50 years old, had collapsed. He added that four to five persons had already been taken out of the debris. He said the police, the MCD and the administration were all part of the rescue effort and that everything possible was being done to make sure there was no further incident.
The collapse comes about a month after a boys' PG building in Delhi's Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6 while repair work was going on. Seven people died and several others were injured in that incident.
Since then, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been running enforcement drives against dangerous buildings, unauthorised construction, and violations of the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) and building bye-laws. As per an ANI report, the civic body carried out demolition drives in several areas on Tuesday, including Old Seemapuri.
This is a developing story and the numbers of people rescued or trapped may change.
