From WFH in office to double parking charges: Govt announces measures to curb pollution as Delhi braces for winters
PTC News Desk: Delhi has announced several measures to tackle winter air pollution, with the government starting preparations three months ahead of the season.
The measures include doubling parking charges, stopping construction and demolition work, and introducing work-from-home for government and private sector employees.
The revised parking charges will come into effect from November 1.
Staggered office timings
From November 1 to February 28, 2027, offices will follow different working hours. MCD offices will operate from 8:30 am to 5 pm, while Delhi government offices will function from 10 am to 6:30 pm.
The government and private sectors will also operate with 50% staff strength, with the remaining 50% employees working from home during this period.
Construction and demolition activities that generate dust will also be banned for a specified period.
Earlier measures to control pollution
Delhi has previously introduced several measures to reduce winter pollution, including the odd-even traffic scheme, under which vehicles were allowed to operate on alternate days based on their registration numbers.
However, vehicle emissions are only one source of Delhi's pollution. Dust, industrial emissions and other sources also contribute significantly.
Smoke from stubble burning in neighbouring Punjab and Haryana has also been identified as one of the factors contributing to Delhi's poor air quality during the winter months.
