Delhi schools closed until Jan 12 - cold weather closure for class 5 and below

New Delhi, January 07: Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced on Sunday that schools in the national capital will remain closed until January 12 for students from nursery to Class 5 due to prevailing cold weather conditions. The decision extends the winter break that began on January 1, with classes initially scheduled to resume on January 8.

In a social media post, Atishi conveyed, "Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next five days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from nursery to Class 5."

This development follows a series of changes in the official announcements. Initially, the Delhi government had issued an order on Saturday, extending the winter break until January 10. However, the Directorate of Education later retracted the order, citing it as "incorrectly issued." Officials stated that a final decision on reopening schools amid the cold weather conditions would be made on Sunday.

Delhi and its neighboring states have been grappling with cold to severe cold day conditions, experiencing temperatures below normal due to a layer of fog obstructing sunlight. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates these conditions to persist in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan for the next two days, with a significant decrease thereafter.

On Saturday, the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 15.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal. Sunday morning saw a minimum temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius, just a degree above normal. The IMD forecast for the day includes shallow fog, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to settle at 16 and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Simultaneously, the Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration issued an order declaring holidays for students up to Class 8 in all schools in Noida and Greater Noida until January 14.
