Delhi Winter: Adding Christmas vibes in the national capital, ‘City of Hearts’ experience chilliest Christmas as mercury dropped to 9.1°C and residents woke up to a typically chilly and foggy morning. 

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature in the national capital on Sunday dropped to 9.1°C even as residents woke up to a typically chilly and foggy morning.


The festival comes every year on December 25 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ. It's a religious festival of giving, sharing, loving, and wishing. The festival is celebrated as a culture in the Christian community to bid goodbye to the previous year. People purchase a lot during the Christmas celebration, but they dress up as Santa Claus and surprise each other with gifts.

As the chill tightened its grip on the national capital, many were seen huddling around bonfires to keep themselves warm. A few of the commuters said that the mercury fell significantly in the early hours of Saturday and that the cold was extreme.

Meanwhile, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital was recorded in the 'Very Poor' range, at 8 am on Sunday, according to SAFAR-India (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research).

The national weather forecasting agency earlier said the minimum temperature across North India was likely to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days.

It was freezing cold in most parts of the northern states on Christmas eve, with hilly areas recording its coldest night of the season that froze water supply lines at several places.
