Dense fog hits flights' schedule in Delhi; check details

New Delhi, Wednesday 27: Delhi was shrouded in dense fog today, causing disruptions in travel and prompting advisories from transportation authorities. This thick layer of fog, a consequence of the ongoing cold wave gripping the national capital, significantly reduced visibility across various parts of the city. Commuters faced delays as traffic slowed down, and the impact extended to the railway services, resulting in cancellations and delays, as per PTI reports.

The Delhi Airport issued a cautionary notice, emphasising that while flight operations were ongoing, non-compliant flights with CAT III standards might encounter interruptions due to the fog. Passengers were urged to stay updated by contacting their respective airlines, particularly to ascertain if their flights were CAT III compliant, as per the advisory released by the airport authorities.

CAT III-compliant aircraft possess specialized technology and instrumentation that enables them to function under low-visibility conditions, like the dense fog experienced in Delhi. In contrast, flights lacking this compliance might face delays or cancellations, prioritizing the safety of both passengers and crew.

Simultaneously, a weather alert encompassing several northern regions, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, highlighted the expectation of dense to very dense fog in these areas. Additionally, Uttar Pradesh might witness these conditions at a few places, with Rajasthan and Uttarakhand also likely to encounter pockets of dense fog, as announced by the regional meteorological center.

The impact of this foggy spell was evident on Tuesday as well, with decreased visibility causing delays in flight schedules at the Delhi airport. Safdarjung's primary weather station recorded visibility at 200 meters around 5:30 am, while the Palam station reported a reduced visibility of 100 meters during the same period.

The persistence of this fog and its effect on travel underscored the significance of adhering to safety standards and staying updated on flight statuses, reflecting the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions during this season in the national capital and its adjoining regions.
