India issues stark warning to UN Security Council: Risking oblivion without reforms
PTC News Desk: India has issued a stern warning to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), emphasising the urgent need for reforms to prevent the global body from descending into "oblivion." Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, voiced frustration over prolonged discussions on reforms, highlighting that nearly 25 years have passed since world leaders committed to comprehensive reforms at the Millennium Summit in 2000.
During an informal meeting on Security Council reforms, Ms. Kamboj stressed the imperative of concrete progress, especially considering the voices of younger generations and rectifying historical injustices, particularly in Africa. She cautioned against maintaining the status quo, advocating for a more inclusive approach to reform that addresses disparities in the Council's composition.

Emphasizing the need for representativeness and equitable participation, Ms. Kamboj warned that failure to heed the demands for reform could render the Council irrelevant. She urged a proactive stance, suggesting the identification of specific groups or countries deserving special consideration in the reform process and advocating for cross-regional arrangements to ensure diverse representation.

Echoing India's stance, the G4 countries—India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan—underscored the importance of reflecting the diversity of views from the UN's 193 member states, particularly in the non-permanent category.
Ms. Kamboj's remarks on the need for comprehensive reforms align with India's consistent support for UNSC reforms, including expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories. This call for action underscores India's commitment to ensuring a more representative and effective Security Council that addresses contemporary global challenges.
