The accident happened late Saturday night on Interstate 65 near Crown Point in Indiana’s Lake County. According to local reports, the deceased student was identified as Navya Gadusu.

According to the Indiana State Police, the crash took place around 11.15 pm when a red minivan carrying seven adults was moving slowly on the highway behind another vehicle facing mechanical trouble.
The police said a car approaching from behind failed to notice the slow-moving minivan in time. The driver tried to avoid a collision by swerving left but ended up crashing into the side of the minivan.
The impact pushed the minivan off the road and into a ditch. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle with mechanical issues was not involved in the collision.
During the investigation, police found that the minivan had only two regular seats in the front. The remaining passengers were reportedly sitting on boxes of mangoes without seat belts at the time of the accident.
