PTC News Desk: A six-month-old infant died in Madhya Pradesh's Indore as the city grapples with contaminated water crisis. The death toll climbed to 10 while more than 2,000 people have fallen ill after consuming contaminated water supplied by the municipal corporation.

The authorities have dismissed an official from the service and suspended two others. While the authorities are yet to release the official death toll, a senior officer in the district administration said that the figure has crossed 10.

An in-charge sub-engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department at the Indore Municipal Corporation has been dismissed, while a zonal officer and an assistant engineer have been suspended on the directions of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

"Sewer leakages lead to such incidents, will ensure such negligence will be avoided in future," Chief Minister Yadav said.

The action comes after the Madhya Pradesh health department reported that at least 149 people fell ill after drinking contaminated water in the area. The chief minister is expected to visit the affected families on Thursday.

Meanwhile, local reports claim that the number of affected people in Bhagirathpura could be over 1,100. An initial investigation has indicated that sewage water may have mixed with the drinking water supply due to a leak in the pipeline. Indore receives its water through pipelines from the Narmada River.
