Plastic ban: Karnataka bans use of plastic in idli preparation after carcinogenic risk found
Karnataka idli plastic ban: The Karnataka Government has officially banned the use of plastic in idli preparation across all hotels in the state after the Health Department found traces of carcinogenic substances in some samples.
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao revealed on Thursday that an inspection by the Karnataka Food Safety Department uncovered the use of polythene sheets instead of the traditional cloth in idli-making at 52 hotels across the state. The department collected 251 samples from various establishments and conducted tests, confirming plastic contamination in 52 of them.
“Traditionally, cloth was used while steaming idlis, but we received reports that some places have switched to plastic. Our investigation found this to be true in multiple cases. Plastic contains carcinogens, which can seep into food and pose serious health risks,” said the minister.
To curb this hazardous practice, the Health Department will soon issue official directives and take strict action against any restaurants, hotels, or food establishments found using plastic sheets in idli-making.
This ban comes as part of the government’s efforts to ensure food safety and protect consumers from harmful substances. The authorities have urged hotels and food vendors to adhere to traditional cooking practices and avoid materials that may contaminate food.
