Over 1,500 Indians deported from US since Trump’s second term began: MEA
PTC Web Desk: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed on Thursday that a total of 1,563 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States since January 20, 2025 — the day Donald Trump assumed office for his second term as President. Most of these deportations were carried out via commercial flights.
"From January 20 this year until yesterday, approximately 1,563 Indian citizens have been deported from the U.S. The majority returned through commercial airlines," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated during a media briefing.
In Trump’s previous term (2017–2021), the US authorities deported 6,135 Indians, with the highest figure recorded in 2019 at 2,042. Other annual figures include 1,024 in 2017, 1,180 in 2018, and 1,889 in 2020, as per data earlier shared in Parliament.
In comparison, during Joe Biden’s tenure, the number of Indian nationals deported was significantly lower, estimated to be around 3,000 in total.
During his first term, Donald Trump had initiated strict measures against illegal immigration. A Reuters report noted that 37,660 migrants were deported during his first month in office in 2017. According to sources, the US is currently preparing to send back approximately 18,000 undocumented Indians.
