Parliament Budget Session 2025: Deportation procedure in place since 2012, includes use of restraints, says Jaishankar on US deportations
PTC Web Desk: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the issue of Indian nationals allegedly living illegally abroad and their deportation while speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged Opposition MPs to refrain from "planned disruptions" that could obstruct parliamentary proceedings.
"The matter is with the government and falls under the Ministry of External Affairs. Since it involves another country, the government has taken cognizance of it. I urge you not to create deliberate disruptions that could hinder the smooth functioning of the House. Question Hour is a crucial session where members raise citizens' concerns, and the government provides answers," Birla stated.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the deportation of Indian citizens from the United States, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that the process is managed by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authority. He highlighted that the deportation procedure, in place since 2012, includes the use of restraints; however, ICE has assured that women and children are exempt from such measures.
Jaishankar said India was actively engaging with the US government to ensure that deported individuals are not subjected to mistreatment. He also reaffirmed that it is the responsibility of every country to accept the return of its nationals found residing illegally abroad.
"It is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad...", he said.
He said, "The authorities have been given instructions to sit with every one of the returnees (Indians deported from the US) and find out how they went to America, who was the agent, and how do we take precautions so that this does not continue..."
