PM Modi arrives in Canada to attend G7 summit. Why is this visit significant ?
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary on Tuesday to attend the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, marking a significant moment in India-Canada ties following a phase of strained diplomatic relations.
The two day summit brings together leaders of some of the developed economies of the world including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Canada, Japan, and the European Union. The summit also hold participation of representatives from international bodies such as the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During the 23-hour tour, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral meetings with global leaders and attend the Outreach Sessions at the G7 Summit, coming over a month after India's Operation Sindoor that targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attacks.
"As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigor, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the summit," the Prime Minister said in a statement before his departure.
PM Modi's visit to Canada comes after a period of friction between New Delhi and Ottawa, triggered by Canadian allegations that Indian agents were involved in the killing of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar outside a gurdwara in Canada in 2023.
India had strongly rejected the allegations. The diplomatic standoff escalated as both countries expelled senior diplomats in a tit-for-tat response. New Delhi has consistently voiced concerns about extremism and anti-India activities on Canadian soil and urged Canadian authorities to take concrete steps to curb such elements.
