Government revamps National Security Advisory Board

Second Cabinet Committee on Security underway at PM Modi's residence

Pahalgam Terror Attack LIVE UPDATES: Prime Minister Narendra is chairing  a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA)  and Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) which is the government's highest decision-making body on national security matters. This will be the second CCS meet. The meeting is considered as the most powerful amongst all the cabinet committees, hence referred to as 'super cabinet'.

Last super cabinet was held after the deadly Pulwama attacks in 2019.


This comes a day after a high-level meeting was convened by the Prime Minister at his residence in New Delhi on Tuesday, a week after 26 people – mostly tourists – were killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

During the review meeting, PM Modi granted complete operational freedom to all the armed forces to respond to the recent attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam which killed 26 people mostly tourists. 

The meeting was attended by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs — Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh.

Functions of CCPA

  • The CCPA reviews and decides on important political and economic matters of the country and meets on crucial occasions. 
  • The CCPA mainly considers the relations between the Centre and the states, especially when there is a need to form consensus.
  • Discussions and decisions are made on economic policies and internal security issues that have political implications.
  • It also helps with coordination between various ministries on issues that have far-reaching political consequences.
  • Besides, the CCPA also discusses and decides on foreign policy issues that are likely to have an impact on the country's politics.
