Police officer and gangster killed in shootout at Jammu and Kashmir hospital

PTC News Desk: A tragic shootout at Government Medical College in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the death of a gangster and a police officer succumbing to his injuries, authorities reported. Sub-Inspector Deepak Sharma sustained critical injuries during an encounter with gangsters on the medical college premises the previous evening. Additionally, a special police officer sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The altercation ensued when members of the notorious Shunoo Group, allegedly led by Vasudev, were pursued by a police team. Upon reaching the medical college campus, the gangsters attempted to evade capture, but were cornered by the police.


In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one gangster was fatally shot. Sub-Inspector Sharma sustained a critical head injury from a bullet during the confrontation. Following initial treatment in Kathua, the injured officer was transferred to Pathankot, Punjab. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries the following morning, according to officials.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his condolences and paid tribute to the fallen officer, hailing his valor and courage. "I salute the valour and indomitable courage of PSI Deepak Sharma, who made supreme sacrifice while valiantly fighting and neutralising a most-wanted gangster in Kathua. His supreme sacrifice will remain etched in our hearts. Deepest condolences to the family of martyr Deepak Sharma," Mr. Sinha stated.

Emphasising solidarity with the martyr's family and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Mr. Sinha pledged retribution for the officer's sacrifice. "Every drop of blood of our martyr will be avenged, and we are committed to creating a fear-free J&K," he declared, highlighting the dedication and resilience exhibited by the police force in confronting various challenges and adversaries.
