Satnam Singh Sandhu Profile: Satnam Singh Sandhu, a prominent Indian educationalist and the founder of the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), a distinguished edupreneur, philanthropist, and visionary leader has been recently nominated as Rajya Sabha MP by the Union Government. 
Satnam Singh Sandhu is filling a vacancy created by the retirement of a nominated member. 

The official notice by Government of India reads, “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated members.”

Meanwhile, the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar also took to his X handle (former Twitter) to welcome the nomination of Satnam Singh Sandhu and wrote, “I welcome the nomination of Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu Ji to the Rajya Sabha. His rich work in community service and his passion towards education, innovation and learning will be big sources of strength for the Rajya Sabha. I wish him the very best for his tenure.”

Satnam Singh Sandhu is a distinguished edupreneur, philanthropist, and visionary leader, is guided by principles of truthfulness and a commitment to serving humanity. He is Founder and Chancellor of Chandigarh University, Founder of Chandigarh Welfare Trust and also the patron of Chandigarh Welfare Trust (CWT) and New India Development (NID) Foundation—two NGOs working on community welfare projects in Chandigarh.

Satnam Singh Sandhu’s journey from farmer to Chancellor

Born into a family of farmers, Satnam Singh Sandhu hails from the small village of Rasoolpur in Punjab’s Ferozepur. Initially following in his father's footsteps, he worked as a farmer. 
Having completing his education from run-down government school, Satnam Singh Sandhu often shares his tales of the challenges he faced during his early days. Recounting his experiences, he describes studying in a school where classes were conducted under trees and students used to bring sack cloths from their home to sit and study on them. Following his schooling, he shifted to Moga to pursue his graduation. 

Taking a loan of Rs 96 lakh in 2000, he transitioned into the education sector and went on to establish Chandigarh University which is recognised as Asia's fastest-growing private university. An agriculturist Sandhu made creation of world class educational institution his life’s mission by fist laying the foundation of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) at Landran in Mohali in 2001 and then going a step forward with the formation of Chandigarh University in 2012 which a found a place in QS World Rankings 2023, fist among private universities in Asia.

He also has made a mark with his efforts for national integration at home and has worked extensively with the diaspora abroad.

During the time of his graduation, Satnam Singh Sandhu met with Dhaliwal. . In 1995, Dhaliwal ventured into politics, and Sandhu was by his side, helping him out as he was elected chief of the local civic body. 
Meanwhile, Sandhu’s admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always been evident. Last year also Sandhu spearheaded a delegation of Sikh NRIs and prominent members of the Punjabi community that met the Prime Minister in Delhi under the "Sadbhavna program." After the meeting, Sandhu expressed his appreciation, stating, "Our PM Modi has shown a very big heart by organizing the Sadbhavna event for Sikhs and spending time with us."
