Punjab and Chandigarh weather alert: Heavy rain today and tomorrow, IMD issues storm warning for Punjab & Haryana

PTC Web Desk: The weather across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh changed abruptly, with dark clouds covering most of the region since morning and intermittent drizzle in several places. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) centre in Chandigarh says an active western disturbance will keep the weather unsettled from October 29 to 31, with rain and thunderstorm activity picking up.

Hailstorms are also possible at isolated spots in both states. The department has warned of gusty winds blowing at 40 to 60 km/h and asked people to stay alert.

Two systems at work

Forecasters say a cyclonic circulation has formed over Jammu and nearby areas because of a western disturbance. A second western disturbance is also fully active in the mid-troposphere. Together, the two systems have created conditions for rain, lightning and strong winds across the region.

Light to moderate rain is expected at many places in Punjab on October 29 and 30. Most parts of Haryana are likely to see rain on both days. Chandigarh is also expected to get heavy spells today and tomorrow.

What the department fears

IMD has flagged the risk of heavy damage from the winds, rain and hail. Standing crops in the fields, and harvested produce lying in mandis or in the open, are at risk. Hail could damage vehicles, window panes and kutcha roofs. Strong gusts may snap tree branches and bring down weak structures, disrupting electricity and water supply. Slippery roads, waterlogging and poor visibility are likely to slow traffic.

Advisory for farmers

Farmers have been asked to move harvested crops lying in the open to safe, dry places without delay. With rain and storms in the forecast, they should also postpone irrigation and the spraying of fertilisers and pesticides for now. The agriculture department has issued detailed guidelines and farmers are urged to follow them.

Safety tips for the public

During thunder and lightning, people should avoid open fields and stay inside sturdy buildings. They should also keep away from windows, trees, electric poles, wires and water bodies.
