PTC Web Desk: A six-year-old boy lost his life and four others were injured after a speeding car crashed into an autorickshaw and pedestrians in Lucknow’s Banthra area on Thursday evening, police officials said.

The accident took place around 6 pm near a Hanuman temple when a Swift car allegedly rammed into an autorickshaw and then hit people walking along the roadside. According to the police, the impact caused panic in the area as bystanders rushed to help the injured.

Those hurt in the incident have been identified as Armaan (12), Awadh Bihari (42), Sadhana Verma (35), Meena Devi (60) and six-year-old Dikshant Patel. All of them were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Dikshant, who had suffered serious injuries, was later referred to another medical facility. However, he succumbed during treatment, police confirmed.

ACP Krishna Nagar Rajneesh Verma said the driver, Gaurab Singh (21), has been taken into custody. An FIR has been registered against him for rash and negligent driving and for endangering human life.

The police said Singh is a Class 12 student. He was reportedly returning from a farewell party with four friends when the incident occurred. The car was allegedly borrowed from a friend and officials confirmed that he holds a valid driving licence.

During questioning, the accused claimed that he got confused between the brake and accelerator pedals. He also said a tyre burst may have led to the loss of control. The police said these claims are being verified as part of the investigation.

The incident comes shortly after another case in Kanpur where a speeding luxury car reportedly hit pedestrians and two-wheelers on VIP Road in the Gwaltoli area, leaving several people injured.

Further investigation into the Banthra accident is underway.
