Russia backs India's bid for permanent seat at United Nations Security Council

PTC News Desk: Russia has backed permanent UNSC seat for India. Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has voiced his support for India, Brazil and African nations in the United Nations Security Council with the objective of global representation.

"Countries such as India, Brazil, as well as representatives of Africa should have been on a permanent basis in the Security Council for a long time. This is necessary to ensure representativeness, representation of the global majority," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

India has been at the front calling for the reforms in the Security Council including expansion in both permanent and non permanent members. India has majorly called out the methods of the organizations deeming them unfit for the 21st century and said that it does not reflect contemporary geo-political realities. New Delhi has multiple time highlighted that it deserves a permanent seat at the horse-shoe table.

Last month, Britain also joined the list of countries who are supporting permanent seat at UNSC for India. In addition, Chile, France, Micronesia and Portugal have voiced support for India's bid for a permanent UNSC seat. Both Russia and US who are permanent members have also encouraged India's inclusion in this powerful global body.

India last sat at the UN high table as a non-permanent member in 2021-22. There has been a growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.
