Top BJP leaders to meet on Sunday, VP candidate likely to get finalised
PTC News Desk: The BJP parliamentary board is expected to meet on August 17 to finalise the ruling alliance’s Vice-Presidential nominee. The NDA has already empowered Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president J.P. Nadda to select the candidate.
The deadline for filing nominations is August 21. Sources said the nominee, accompanied by the Prime Minister, Union ministers, and several BJP chief ministers and deputy CMs, is likely to take part in the nomination process.
Ahead of this, the NDA candidate may also attend a meeting with BJP and allied leaders as Parliament’s Monsoon Session resumes on August 18. Multiple sets of nomination papers are expected to be submitted in support of the candidate.
If the Opposition fields its own contender — considered a strong likelihood — the election will take place on September 9. With its clear majority in the electoral college comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, the NDA’s candidate is seen as virtually assured of victory.
The election follows the sudden resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
