Big Shock in Mohali: VR Punjab Mall shuts down, jobs and businesses hit
PTC Web Desk: A major shopping destination in Mohali, VR Punjab Mall, has been shut down with immediate effect, raising concerns about the future of hundreds of employees and business partners associated with it.
The mall, operated by VR Malwa Private Limited, has been closed after the management flagged serious safety concerns in the building structure. According to the company, the issue came to light after the earthquake reported on April 3, which is believed to have affected the structural stability of the property.
Following a technical inspection, experts reportedly found significant risks in the building. Keeping public safety in mind, the management decided to suspend operations. Local authorities, shop owners and suppliers have already been informed about the closure.
The company has clarified that the mall will reopen only after the structure is declared completely safe and fit for use.
However, some experts believe that structural damage may not be the only reason behind the shutdown. They point out that the mall had been facing challenges such as declining footfall, financial losses and increasing competition from newer malls in the area.
The mall was earlier known as North Country Mall before being rebranded as VR Punjab in 2017. Despite the rebranding, it struggled to regain its popularity. There had also been discussions in recent months about converting the property into a hospital.
Reports suggest that another mall located on Airport Road is also facing a similar situation and may shut down soon.
