Punjab DGP claims no spurt in murders in state, cites figures

Chandigarh, April 11: Punjab DGP VK Bhawra on Monday said that number of murders in the state has decreased this year, contrary to the allegations made by the opposition that the murders in the state were on the rise. DGP Bhawra, while addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on Monday said that Punjab this year has seen 158 murders so far, as compared to 725 in 2021 and 757 in the year 2020. He further informed the media that the monthly average of murders in the state is 50 this year, compared to about 65 or 70 previously. The DGP also said that "even though murders in the state are on the decline, I'm not saying we should be happy about these figures. We need to reduce the murder rate in the state." He stated that gangsters were involved in six of the 158 reported cases this year. We have traced such cases, know who did recce and who fired shots," he said, adding, "at least 24 accused were arrested in these cases, while seven pistols and an equal number of vehicles were recovered." The DGP further informed the media that “Nine other murders were sensational and all were traced. The killings took place due to family disputes, and professional rivalry. Police have prevented gangster crime in four cases and have identified 545 gangsters till date, 515 of them have been arrested.” Furthermore, during the press conference, DGP Bawara urged all sections of society to work together to reduce crime. He claimed that the state's law and order situation has deteriorated in recent days and police have been working to maintain peace in the state.
