Punjab Police dismiss advisory asking personnel to be in civilian clothes during non-working hours
PTC News Desk: Punjab Police on Tuesday rejected several social media posts that claimed that police headquarters had issued an advisory directing all its personnel to avoid wearing their uniform while commuting to and from duty.
In a post on X, Punjab Police said no such advisory had been issued by the police headquarters or by any office under it, and clarified that no directive existed asking personnel to avoid uniform during travel or to wear civilian clothes while commuting to and from duty. The force termed the claim a "false advisory" and asked citizens and police personnel to disregard the messages circulating on social media, urging them to rely only on official channels for authentic information.
The advisory came after an audio clip, purportedly of a woman police officer instructing staff to avoid travelling in uniform. The audio clip sparked widespread speculation among the public and within the police department, leading to several questions that officers had to address. A Congress leader also shared the clip on social media, increasing its reach and giving the issue political attention before the police issued a fact-check.
Police officials said such fake messages can create unnecessary confusion, especially when the department is already dealing with concerns about the safety of its personnel. They urged people not to share unverified information and to check facts through official police social media accounts before forwarding such content.
