Punjab: Farmers clash with police in Malerkotla over land acquisition for highway project
PTC News Desk: In Malerkotla, members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ugrahan staged a strong protest against the police who arrived to acquire land for a project under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Upon learning about the police and administration team's arrival to seize the land, the farmers immediately mounted a strong opposition.
A fierce clash broke out between the farmers and the police, resulting in the detention of several farmers' leaders. The police attempted to block the farmers who were trying to reclaim land that had been acquired for the Jammu-Katra road project. Tensions escalated as both sides faced off, leading to a charged atmosphere in the area.
The conflict was not limited to this incident alone. The previous day, controversy arose when the police and administrative officials suddenly took over land near Sarod village on the Delhi-Katra highway. The officials used a tractor to plow through standing crops to claim the land. This action sparked strong opposition from Kisan Union Ekta Ugrahan, leading to further protests. In response to the demonstrations, the police arrested several members of the farmers' union and took them to the police station.
