10 killed in mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia during Jewish Hanukkah celebration
PTC News Desk: At least 10 people have been killed and several injured after gunmen opened fire during a celebratory Jewish Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach in Australia's Sydney.
According to police officials, the attack appears to be planned for months in bid to target a Chanukkah event at Bondi Beach Park near the children’s playground.
One of the gunmen was killed at the scene, while another was shot and taken into custody, where he is being treated by emergency medical teams. Authorities are continuing to comb the area amid concerns about possible explosives, following an unverified report of a suspicious device beneath a pedestrian bridge.
Social media footage shows a bystander charging at one of the attackers, overpowering him and seizing his shotgun, while another shooter continued firing from an elevated position on the bridge. Witnesses said at least three firearms were used and noted that the attackers appeared to be wearing ammunition belts.
NSW Police and emergency responders launched a large-scale operation, deploying 26 units that included helicopters, intensive care paramedics and specialist tactical teams. Several injured people were treated at the scene before being taken to hospitals such as St Vincent’s, Royal Prince Alfred and St George.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” saying his thoughts were with those affected. He said he had spoken with the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier and urged the public to follow police instructions.
