British spy handed over intel to Canada linking India to Nijjar killing: Report
PTC News Desk: A new documentary released this week claims that British spy call intercepts helped Canadian authorities establish alleged links between India and the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The Bloomberg Originals report titled Inside the Deaths that Rocked India’s Relations with the West stated that a British intelligence agency—believed to be the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), known as the nation’s primary listening post—intercepted conversations discussing three potential targets.
Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh designated as a terrorist by India in 2020 for his involvement in Khalistani extremism, was reportedly one of the individuals named in the intelligence shared with Canada under the ‘Five Eyes’ alliance, which includes the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
According to the documentary, “In late July 2023, the Nijjar murder investigation saw a major breakthrough when the UK obtained crucial information.” The intelligence was shared under strict protocols — it had to be hand-delivered to Ottawa, kept off electronic systems, and only a small number of Canadian officials pre-approved by London were permitted access to it, the report claims.
